To make this date walnut bread, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Chopped pitted dates
  • Sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Lemon zest
  • Hot milk or water
  • Butter
  • Egg
  • Self-raising flour
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Walnuts halves to decorate

Instructions:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 °F (180°C) and grease and line bottom of bread pan with parchment paper.
  • Mix the dates with baking soda, lemon zest and hot milk. Set aside to soak for 10 minutes, until the dates are softened and mixture cooled to room temperature.
  • In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Then add the egg and beat well. Stir in the date mixture to mix.
  • Sift the flour into the mixture and fold using a spatula. Add chopped walnuts and fold in. Do not overmix.
  • Spoon mixture into the prepared bread pan and spread evenly. Top with walnut halves to decorate.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out on a wire rack to finish cooling, about 20 minutes.
